When I returned home to the tea company, my tribe was waiting. Sage ran in first and everyone hugged him. I showed everyone the pictures and told them what our new mission had to include—increasing demand for organic, fair-trade tea. Everyone agreed we would do it and reworked the mission statement to say, “We provide health and happiness to consumers while alleviating poverty for tea workers worldwide.” A wise consultant had once said to me, “With a mission to serve, you cannot fail.”

Afterward, I walked into my office and saw a big pile of phone messages on my desk. Tristine, my assistant, followed me in and said, “I have some big news, Zhena. Safeway is interested in distributing the tea nationwide. They want you to go up to their headquarters. And a very nice man called who wants you to present to him and his team at Kroger.”

My heart raced. I couldn’t believe it.

“Wait, here’s one more, Zhena. Have you heard of a place called Wegmans? I looked them up online and they are voted the best place to work in the US. A man called from there as well and said they’d like to talk to you about bringing the tea east into their stores.”

I felt for my chair and sat down. I put my head in my hands so that I wouldn’t burst into tears in front of her. I could hear Gnana’s voice in my head: “Zeena, remember, those who can see the invisible can do the impossible.”

Over the course of the next year, our volumes soared.
